My point is, HW is unique in its 3d space movement and the strategy that come with it. HW does a lot great but it is time the devs branched out more with their campaign design and bring it up to modern standards. I think this is typical of what I have seen from fans of HW, they want nothing but the status quo, but that is all we have got from HW and as a result HW has never found the success of other modern space strategy games. They can put focus on the space combat like they have always done AND wrap that with a quality non-linear campaign. Have more faith in their capability, they could deliver something new and great. make a half assed job of trying something new. the devs keep doing what they have always done or 2. Your argument is based on the assumption of two choices: 1. Originally posted by Machine Spirit:What does the Z axis movement got to do with anything I have said? I am talking about linear vs non-linear campaigns, which is possible do AND have a good story. More HW1 less HW2 where you just ctrl drag for the battles pretty much all the time. Players that are more engaged with the battle can gain more advantages. Giving player greater control over the ships, and revamp the Formation system. IMHO they should emphasis more on the strategy of 3D space, for example giving fighters more advantages striking from above or below your enemies, etc. Even the most recent 3Kingdoms Total Wars' RTS battle part sucks compares to Warhammer Total War, which the compaign part sucks. There are few games can get both part right with enough depth. I'd rather have them work on the RTS part, add more depth to it, than streamline the RTS and add a half-assed sandbox compaign. Have you seen any true 3D RTS that utilize the Z axis on the market right now? Please let me know. HW3 will be just fine if they keep doing what they have done best. A linear campaign will turn off new players or at the very least will only engage them for a limited time, but a more open non-linear game will turn off fans that have stuck with the franchise. Imo there is nothing wrong with a HW game having a more open campaign and story but I think this property is one of those that will be damned if they do and damned if they don't.

The reason HW campaigns are linear is because they are told as a journey from point A to B, the story itself has a specific style that they have done for all the games, but are we still not passed this? Does a HW game ALWAYS have to be about one central ship/vehicle, travelling in a straight line with no way back? If the answer is "no" I get it, but that will also limit its appeal in a market that has left this style behind.
